Community is about working together with those around us towards a shared goal. Few places exemplify this more than a school community. Recently, we at Lonepine Bison had the opportunity to become integrated in our local community as part of the school lunch program, in what we hope will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship. At the heart of our school’s commitment to nourishing young minds and bodies lies a dedication to sustainability and local sourcing. We feel truly fortunate for this opportunity to be a part of this. While this has been in the works, today it officially kicked-off when bison chili, made with our ranch-raised bison, was served at the school lunch to a cafeteria full of students and educators. While there was no drumroll or ribbon-cutting, and quite frankly, many might not have even noticed, we’re ok with that. In fact, we are thrilled, because we and all who were involved know that with every spoonful that was gobbled up amidst the chit-chat and chatter, young bodies and minds were nourished with a healthy, sustainable protein option. Healthy for the body, the community, and the environment, this inaugural lunch celebrated the principles of ethical ranching, environmental stewardship, and building community.
A Step Towards Sustainable Dining
With a steadfast focus on promoting sustainability in every aspect of their operations, incorporating bison from Lonepine Bison Ranch was a natural choice. Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Montana, Lonepine Bison Ranch is an example of sustainable agriculture, raising bison on open pastures and range hills where they have their freedom to forage. This commitment to ethical farming practices aligns seamlessly with the school’s values as an institution dedicated to fostering a healthier planet for future generations.
From Ranch to Cafeteria: A Journey of Local Sourcing
The decision to feature bison from Lonepine Bison Ranch in school lunches underscores the dedication to the Farm-To-School movement. This initiative, strives to connect students with the origins of their food while supporting local producers and reducing their environmental footprint. As a school staff member aptly puts it, “The farm to school program really allows us to bring in local products from gardens, farms, and ranches.” This ethos of sourcing locally not only supports our regional economy but also ensures that our meals are fresh, nutritious, and sustainably produced.
Savoring Sustainable Nutrition
Bison, revered for its lean protein and rich flavor, offers a nutritional powerhouse that aligns with the commitment to promoting healthy eating habits among students. Unlike conventional livestock farming, which often relies on intensive methods and can contribute to environmental degradation, bison ranching represents a more harmonious relationship between animals and the land. By incorporating bison into school lunches, the school provides students with a delicious and nutritious option that embodies the values of sustainability and wellness.
Empowering Future Generations
Beyond the plate, the Farm-To-School initiative serves as a valuable educational tool, empowering students to become conscientious consumers and stewards of the environment. Through hands-on learning experiences and interactive lessons, students gain a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the importance of supporting local agriculture. By fostering a connection to the land and the community, the program nurtures a sense of responsibility and reverence for the natural world.
Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future
As we reflect on the success of being a part of the first Farm-to-School Bison lunch, we are inspired to continue our journey towards a more sustainable future by working closely with our community. The school is excited to work with us and other local producers and are poised to expand their menu offerings (we highly suggest bison tacos!) to further integrate sustainability into the school culture. Together, we can sow the seeds of change and cultivate a healthier, more resilient food system for generations to come.
In celebrating the inaugural serving of Lonepine Bison Ranch bison at the school lunch, we not only savor a delicious meal but also honor the spirit of sustainability and community that lies at the heart of our shared mission. Here’s to many more Farm-to-School adventures and the delicious possibilities they hold.

Wow! Love the Bison! So far I have tried the New York steak and the roast. A bit of salt and pepper was all that it needed. The leaner meat is also easier to cook. Less fat dripping means less time checking on the meat and worrying about flareups. I’m looking forward to trying all the different cuts.
